Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Ashmolean underwent a £61 million redevelopment. Award-winning architect Rick Mather designed a new building to replace all but the Grade I listed Cockerell building.
Arranged over five floors with level access throughout, it provides 39 new galleries and 100% more display space than the former building
An extensive temporary exhibition space enables the Ashmolean to host crowd-pulling ‘blockbuster’ exhibitions. A purpose-built Education Centre, with its own entrance, has been created, as well as three new study centres with hands-on access to reserve collections.
Cableduct’s 700 series Stainless Steel floor box was used as a basis, but was altered significantly in order to accommodate the building’s unique requirements.
Firstly, the box was designed to fit within the 40mm screed. The stainless steel lids were designed as loose lay so that when the box was required to be used the lid was removed allowing free access to the services inside.
Secondly, the inner frame was designed to be adjustable along 3 axes so that the base could be laid in the screed PRIOR to knowing how the flooring was to be laid, and then the stainless steel lid and frame adjusted to line up with the surrounding tiles.
